IPL Laser Hair removal

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for hair removal is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes broad-spectrum light to target and reduce unwanted hair growth. Unlike lasers which use a single, focused wavelength, IPL devices emit multiple wavelengths of light.

How IPL Works:

Targeting Melanin: The core principle of IPL hair removal lies in its ability to target melanin, the pigment found in hair. The emitted light pulses are absorbed by this melanin.

Heat Conversion: When the melanin in the hair follicle absorbs the light energy, it converts into heat.

Follicle Damage: This heat then damages the hair follicle and the surrounding cells responsible for hair growth, inhibiting future hair production.

Hair Growth Cycle: IPL is most effective when hair is in its “anagen” or active growth phase, as this is when the hair follicle has the highest concentration of melanin and is attached to its blood supply. Since not all hairs are in this phase at once, multiple treatments are necessary.

The IPL Hair Removal Procedure:

Preparation (Before Treatment):

Shaving: It’s typically recommended to shave the treatment area 24 hours prior to the IPL session. This allows the light to focus on the hair root beneath the skin’s surface, rather than being absorbed by surface hair. Avoid waxing, epilating, or plucking, as these methods remove the hair root that IPL needs to target.

Clean Skin: The area should be clean and free of lotions, deodorants, or other products.

Patch Test: Before the first full treatment, a patch test is often performed on a small area of skin to determine the appropriate light intensity settings for your skin tone and hair color and to check for any adverse reactions.

Sun Exposure: It’s crucial to avoid sun exposure and tanning (both natural and artificial) for several weeks before and after treatment, as tanned skin can make IPL less effective and increase the risk of side effects.

During the Treatment:

Eye Protection: Both the client and the technician will wear protective eyewear to shield their eyes from the intense pulsed light.

Cooling Gel (Optional, for professional treatments): A cool gel may be applied to the skin to enhance comfort and improve light transmission. Many IPL devices also have integrated cooling systems.

Application: The smooth, glass surface of the IPL device’s treatment head is placed directly on the skin.

Light Pulses: Short pulses of broad-spectrum light are delivered to the targeted area. You might feel a sensation often described as a “flick of an elastic band” or a mild stinging.

Movement: The applicator is then moved to the adjacent area, and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated.

Duration: The length of a session varies depending on the size of the area being treated, from a few minutes for small areas to an hour or more for larger ones (e.g., full legs).

After Treatment (Post-Procedure Care):

Redness and Sensitivity: It’s common to experience some mild redness, slight swelling, or a feeling similar to a sunburn in the treated area for a few hours to a couple of days.

Shedding: The damaged hairs will gradually shed over one to three weeks. It might look like the hair is “growing” during this period, but it’s actually being pushed out by the skin.

Soothing: Applying a soothing gel or cool compresses can help alleviate any discomfort.

Sun Protection: Continue to avoid direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF on the treated area.

Avoid Irritants: Avoid activities that cause excessive sweating or friction on the treated area for a couple of days.

3. Treatment Course and Results:

Multiple Sessions: Because hair grows in cycles, multiple IPL sessions are required to effectively target all hairs as they enter their active growth phase. Typically, 6 to 10 treatments are recommended for optimal results, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart initially.

Permanent Reduction: IPL offers permanent hair reduction, meaning a significant decrease in hair growth. While it rarely removes 100% of hair, any regrowth tends to be much thinner, finer, and sparser, requiring minimal maintenance or “touch-up” sessions.

Suitability: IPL is most effective on individuals with fair to medium skin tones and dark hair, as the contrast in pigment allows the light to be absorbed more efficiently by the hair follicle without excessively heating the surrounding skin. It is generally not effective for very light blonde, white, grey, or red hair due to the lack of melanin.
